They go by many names : Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), or simply - Drones.
Regardless of what you call these fascinating machines, they represent cutting-edge technology that will become a major factor in a large variety of global industries in the very near future. The idea for these courses was pioneered by Beebe High School in Beebe, Arkansas, under the direction of former Principal, Mike Tarkington and Chad Mercado, Career and Technical Education instructor. ExplorNet recognizes this fast approaching shift in the workplace landscape, so we applied our curriculum development model to create a set of high school courses that teaches students the skills and knowledge to build, maintain, operate, and successfully utilize the power of drone technology.
ExplorNet's team of highly qualified individuals with specialties in aeronautics, aviation, electronics, robotics, engineering, computer programming, and Federal Aviation Administration guidelines has developed a curriculum that will prepare students for the ever-changing world they will be entering upon graduation (or even sooner).
The result is a three-level course where the frameworks span the spectrum from the basics of aviation, safety and principles of flight to design and manufacturing, industry specific applications, troubleshooting and maintenance, regulations, and mission planning, execution and debriefing. Students can earn the FAA Remote Pilot Certificate by the end of the second level. The third level helps them prepare for drone-related career and entrepreneurial opportunities.
AND THAT'S NOT ALL! Teachers in other CTE areas such as agriculture, construction, photography, law enforcement, public safety may already be using drones in their classes. Now they will have access to a modified UAS curriculum that helps them align the use of drones to their subject area. This "flex" curriculum can be used as a third level course in any area where the use of drones is applicable.

UAS Training Opportunities
Three-Level Course of Study: Training is five days and covers UAS elements from basics to regulations, to mission planning and execution as well as manufacturing and repair. Training fee includes a drone that meets course requirements and which teachers will build, fly and take back to their class, as well as the first year subscription to online teacher and student resources.
Flex Course: Training is three days and covers fundamentals of UAS operation, careers and regulation. Training fee includes the first year subscription to online teacher and student resources. Teachers must bring their own drone that they will be using in their class. Part 107 Prep Course: Due to multiple requests, we are offering a 3-day prep course to help prepare educators to take their Part 107 test. The FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certiticate is highly recommended for instructors. Prep course does NOT include the test. Year 2 Follow-up Training: The Year 2 Follow-up course will cover advanced content in UAS flight applications, software, and 3D printing.
