LYNCHBURG, VA - Campbell County has become the third Virginia school district to adopt the Quality Teaching and Learning (QTL™) program.  Cycle 1 began April 5 at the Campbell County Technical Center, with 16 eager teachers and administrators participating.

Superintendent George Nolley believes this is the start of something great.

 "Technology is something that kids understand, see and use to improve learning.  As teachers, we need to use technology in instruction to help that learning process along."

Nolley says he spearheaded Campbell County's adoption of the QTL™ program because of the positive reflections he heard from Botetourt County Superintendent Jack Thomas. Botetourt County opened its own QTL™ Center in early 2004, and has sent scores of teachers through the program during its first year.

The Campbell County Center for Quality Teaching and Learning is located at the Technical Center in an existing computer lab.  Technology Director Jim Hawley transformed the room for the program. 

"This is a program that uses technology as it should be, as an instructional tool," Hawley says. "We've been doing professional development in technology, but this is the first time it's been sustained and a part of instructional strategies.  This is what we've been looking for."

The initial QTL™ Cycle will continue each week during the spring, and cycles are being scheduled for teachers during the summer.
