UAS - Drone Courses
About Unmanned Aerial Systems
They go by many names: Unmanned Aerial Systems or UAS, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles or UAV, or simply - Drones.
Regardless of what you call these fascinating machines, they represent cutting-edge technology that will become a major factor in a large variety of global industries in the very near future. ExplorNet recognizes this shift in the workplace landscape, so we applied our curriculum development model to create a set of high school courses that teaches students the skills and knowledge to build, maintain, operate, and successfully utilize the power of drone technology. The result is a three-level program where the frameworks span the spectrum from the basics of aviation, safety and principles of flight to design and manufacturing, industry specific applications, troubleshooting and maintenance, regulations, mission planning, execution and debriefing. Students can earn the FAA Remote Pilot Certificate by the end of the second level. The third level helps them prepare for drone-related career and entrepreneurial opportunities. Unmanned Aerial Systems I
The UAS I course introduces the development and use of drones, safety and regulations, aviation principles, UAS structure and assembly, and basic operations. Students will build a drone and execute appropriate mission planning and flight procedures.
Unmanned Aerial Systems II
Building upon the Level 1 course, students continue to demonstrate appropriate regulations and procedures to fly drones safely. New concepts include: troubleshooting, airspace, interpreting sectional charts and weather reports, operational procedures, and 3D design and printing. Students will develop and execute a UAS mission for an industry-specific-solution scenario. Preparing for and passing the FAA Part 107 Certification test is an integral part of the Level II course.
Unmanned Aerial Systems III
Designed for students to culminate their learning in a real-world setting, in Level III, students will complete a variety of projects (either on campus or off campus) for business and community partners designed to utilize their knowledge and skills and expand their learning related to UAS applications.
UAS Flex Course
The UAS Flex course can be incorporated into a program of study such as Agriculture, Construction, or Film; allowing students to learn how the UAS technology can be utilized in those fields. The course combines topics from Level 1 and II using a ready-to-fly drone.
Introduction to Drones Module
The module is designed for middle school teachers to incorporate drone concepts into a variety of courses. It includes complete lesson plans for twelve lessons including a bell-ringer, presentation with accompanying activity, instructions, rubrics and assessments. Topics include an introduction to aerospace and unmanned aerial systems, career opportunities, rules and regulations, safety procedures, principles of flight, flight operations, and a mission project. Designed for four to five weeks, this curriculum is the perfect fit for teachers to take student learning to new heights!
Programming with Drones Module
The module is designed for middle school or high school teachers to incorporate programming with drone concepts into a variety of courses. It includes complete lesson plans for 10-12 lessons including a bell-ringer, presentation with accompanying activity, instructions, rubrics and assessments. Topics include an introduction to drones, operational procedures, regulations, flight basics, flight plan coding, and a mission project. Designed for four to five weeks, the curriculum using Swift or Python languages is a great fit for STEM, programming, or robotics classes.
